In this interview, we meet Eva, a 19-year-old FSJ (Voluntary Social Year) volunteer at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who shares how her experience in the STAY project helped her grow as a leader and team member. Through everyday involvement in children’s sports and events, Eva shows how young volunteers can make a real impact — not just on others, but on themselves.
Who are you and what do you do at TSV?
I’m Eva, 19 years old, and currently doing my voluntary social year (FSJ) at TSV Bayer 04. In the mornings, I work in the office, and in the afternoons, I lead practical sessions in children’s sports.
I split my time between administration and hands-on sessions, which gives me a great perspective on what it means to be part of a sports club — from planning to play.
What was your role in the STAY project?
I got to take responsibility for events like the Kids’ Carnival — from planning to execution. It felt great to be trusted with such important tasks.
STAY gave me the opportunity to step forward and lead, and that helped me build confidence and feel proud of my contribution.
What did you learn about yourself through this experience?
I realized that when you’re allowed to take the lead, you really grow. It’s not just the kids who benefit from projects like this — I did too.
Being given space to take initiative taught me that leadership isn’t about age, it’s about attitude and commitment.
What would you say to other young people who are unsure about getting involved?
Go for it! You’ll learn so much for life. And you’ll see — being part of a club doesn’t just make sense, it’s also a lot of fun.
Volunteering in sport has shown me that you gain not only experience, but also friendships, purpose, and joy.
Why Eva’s story matters
Eva’s journey through her voluntary year and involvement in the STAY project reflects the importance of giving young people meaningful roles in sport clubs. Her leadership at just 19 shows how much impact a single volunteer can have — and how much personal development can come from simply being given a chance.
STAY is about more than preventing dropout — it’s about creating opportunities for young people to stay, lead, and thrive in sport environments.
